Fullness of Time

In the fullness of time. God renews and makes everything beautiful in His time. I just love this image of God and the world He has created. I imagine it taking place with the blast of trumpets and colorful fanfare and pageantry. But often, these things just slowly and almost imperceptibly creep on us. The autumn equinox last week was the official start of the fall season. It came quietly and for the most part unheralded. But the trees know that it is time to start shedding their leaves and all of a sudden I will wake up one morning to see the wild explosion of colors of the autumn leaves.

I often wait for the fullness of time, the right moment to follow Jesus. I sometimes imagine myself going through my own road to Damascus, or experiencing a mystical vision, or even standing up for my faith and suffering a martyr’s death. In preparation for this grand event, I come up with all sorts of excuses to delay following Jesus. I will start out on my road to Damascus after, I have made sure all my sons are stable and secure on their own. Meantime, they still need me. I will be truly a prayerful and visionary ascetic once I have put all my affairs to order and have simplified my life. I will stand up and witness to Jesus once I have built up enough strength and courage for the task.

Today is the feast of St. Therese of Lisieux. She never travelled far from where she grew up and never had a Damascus experience. And yet, she has been declared the co-patron of the missions with Francis Xavier. She was not a mystic nor a visionary. But she was very prayerful, making every little act of hers a form of prayer. She never wrote any scholarly tract. But she has declared a Doctor of the Church. In her simple and ordinary life as a nun, she has stood witness to God’s life and, through the years, she had inspired and influenced millions to follow Jesus.

The time to be holy is now. The place to begin following Jesus is here. Mine is the God of History. He had moved the earth and people in the past. Mine is the God of the Resurrection. He hold out a future to us that is full of hope and promise. But above all else, mine is the God of the Here-and-now. He presides over the unfolding of life in the ordinary events of everyday. He takes a seed and transforms it into a majestic tree. He takes a shoot and makes it bloom into a beautiful flower. He takes ordinary me and weaves yet another wonderful story.

Let my prayer come before you, Lord.
Psalm 88

As Jesus and his disciples were proceeding
on their journey, someone said to him,
“I will follow you wherever you go.”
Jesus answered him,
“Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests,
but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.”
And to another he said, “Follow me.”
But he replied, “Lord, let me go first and bury my father.”
But he answered him, “Let the dead bury their dead.
But you, go and proclaim the Kingdom of God.”
And another said, “I will follow you, Lord,
but first let me say farewell to my family at home.”
Jesus answered him, “No one who sets a hand to the plow
and looks to what was left behind is fit for the Kingdom of God.”
Luke 9:57-62

Life, Sex and Pleasure

The richness and meaning of life cannot be found in unalloyed joy nor even in unending pleasure. Rather it is in the endless cycle of joys and tears and the ever-upward spiraling of bad things into good and of good things into better. Just as the morning brings hope and newness after the dark night, so does joy come after every bout of tears and sorrow, making the latter sweeter and stronger. Just as the winter is presaged by the colors of autumn and followed by new life in the spring, so do trials push us forward into ever higher grounds of happiness and fulfillment. Just as everything must eventually end and everyone must eventually die, so does the cross eventually lead to the Resurrection.

Last night our movie date was “This Is Where I Leave You.” We enjoyed the movie. It was entertaining, funny and some scenes were touching and poignant. But there was an underlying assumption that bothered me: sex is as natural and necessary as taking food. All the characters just needed to have sex. As the movie unfolded, it made me realize that relationships based mainly on sex tend to be brittle and are fraught with complications. There is more to loving and to relationships than mere pleasure-seeking or stress-releasing sex.

Life is not easy nor simple and we tend to make it even more complicated. Yet, life can be easy and simple if we do not make it even more complicated. There is an inherent drive in me for pleasure and ease. And yet, my life can be richer and fuller if I can and do deny myself of self-seeking pleasures every now and then. There is a tendency in me to think first and only of myself. And yet, my greatest happiness happens when I love and serve others.

Let my prayer come before you, Lord.
Psalm 88

When the days drew near for Jesus to be taken up,
he set his face to go to Jerusalem.
And he sent messengers ahead of him.
On their way they entered a village of the Samaritans
to make ready for him;
but they did not receive him,
because his face was set toward Jerusalem.
When his disciples James and John saw it,
they said, “Lord, do you want us to command fire
to come down from heaven and consume them?”
But he turned and rebuked them.
Then they went on to another village.
Luke 9:51-56

I Believe In Angels

One of the most comforting thoughts from my childhood is that of my Guardian Angel. As a child, I was able to overcome my fear of the dark and of the uncertain by relying on my Guardian Angel to protect me and keep me from harm. One of the earliest prayers I learned is the prayer to my Guardian Angel. In my tender mind, I constantly had a pretty clear picture of my Guardian Angel aways hovering around me, with his wings outspread as my mantle of protection.

As I grew up so did my Guardian Angel and my understanding and recognition of him. I saw less of his wings and his long lily-white robe. Often, he now comes in different guises. I feel low and discouraged, he comes as a loved one to give me a shoulder to lean on or a helping hand to urge me on. I am ecstatic with joy and he comes as a friend to share in my happiness. When I start becoming cynical and pessimistic about things and events around me, he comes as an innocent child to remind me of my own innocence and idealism. And when I stray, he comes as a subtle reminder from persons I truly respect.

Today is the Feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. This passage is from one of today’s readings:
          War broke out in heaven;
Michael and his angels battled against the dragon.
The dragon and its angels fought back,
but they did not prevail
and there was no longer any place for them in heaven.

It sounds like a great cosmic battle between good and evil out there in space right out of a Star Wars movie. And indeed that is what life is all about. Angels are literally God’s messengers to remind me “to choose constantly for the light in the midst of a dark world and for life in the midst of a death-harboring society.” When I am afraid or tired to venture forth into the unknown and uncertain, an angel comes along to prod me on. When I am too angry to see the bigger picture, an angel comes to restore my vision. When I am full of hate and bitterness, an angel comes along to draw me out of my self-centeredness. When I am too greedy or selfish to share, an angel comes along to remind me of the joy of giving.

Yes, I believe in angels.

In the sight of the angels I will sing your praises, Lord.
Psalm 138

Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?”
Jesus answered and said to him,
“Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.”
Nathanael answered him,
“Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.”
Jesus answered and said to him,
“Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree?
You will see greater things than this.”
And he said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see heaven opened
and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
John 1:47-51

Words are all I have to describe the beauty and goodness around me.
Whether I am happy or sad, I have words to comfort and console me.
I reach out to others and words truly come in handy.
I let others into my inner self, and there are words that come to me.
But talk is cheap and words tend to become hollow,
If the acts I do after the words do not follow.
Words spoken merely as words and do not describe reality
Are often mere lies; they are meaningless and  empty.

Reason is what I need to learn and discover the world around me.
It is reason that guides me as I shape my future and destiny.
Yet my reasoning often falls short and fails me
When I do not let my reasons also reside in the heart that beats within me.
Intellectual assent to the truth is exhilarating.
But it remains an mental exercise unless the thinking becomes acting.
The mind is where my thoughts and reason reside.
But the push for me to act, it’s the heart that provide.
Thoughts are merely thoughts and remain powerless, useless.
I unleash their power when through my acts I put them to harness.

Words wield their power when translated into acts.
Reasons become reality when though action they become facts.
When my words and the actions become as one,
When my thoughts and my deeds intimately intertwine,
When who I am in my innermost self
Is the same person as whom others see,
Then I shall have become a person of integrity.
Let my ‘Yes’ be a ‘Yes’ and I will do what I say ‘Yes’ to.
And let my ‘No’ be a ‘No’ and that thing I will forgo.

Your ways, O LORD, make known to me; teach me your paths.
Psalm 25

Jesus said to the chief priests and elders of the people:
“What is your opinion? A man had two sons.
He came to the first and said,
‘Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.’
He said in reply, ‘I will not, ‘
but afterwards changed his mind and went.
The man came to the other son and gave the same order.
He said in reply, ‘Yes, sir, ‘but did not go.
Which of the two did his father’s will?”
They answered, “The first.”
Jesus said to them, “Amen, I say to you,
tax collectors and prostitutes
are entering the kingdom of God before you.
When John came to you in the way of righteousness,
you did not believe him;
but tax collectors and prostitutes did.
Yet even when you saw that,
you did not later change your minds and believe him.”
Matthew 21:28-32

Miscues and Missed Cues

Life has not always given me instructions in the words I understand or expect. In other words, there have been a lot of miscues and missed meanings in my life. There were instances others have invited me into an intimate and deep relationship but I missed their meaning and intent. I thought it was just a conversation. There were occasions others challenged or offered me an exciting career path or a rewarding opportunity and I thought we were just shooting the breeze. Missed cues and miscues. Missed opportunities.

And it gets worse. As I age, I miss more words, more sentences and more meanings in my conversations and interactions. It gets to be very frustrating and I often keep to myself to avoid the miscues and misunderstandings.

What worries me is that I may also be experiencing these miscues and missed meanings in my spiritual life. The Lord might be telling me something and I totally miss it or misunderstand it. I might think I am doing God’s will for me but I might just be indulging my vanity or pride. I might imagine I am doing good but I could just very well offending people and antagonizing those around me.

My prayer time has been my refuge. I keep still. And in the stillness, just listen and be filled with God’s Presence. And I entrust everything to the Lord.

In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge.
Psalm 90

And all were astounded at the greatness of God.
While everyone was amazed at all that he was doing,
Jesus said to his disciples,
“Let these words sink into your ears:
The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into human hands.”
But they did not understand this saying;
its meaning was concealed from them,
so that they could not perceive it.
And they were afraid to ask him about this saying

Luke 9:43-45

Where I Truly Want To Be

I have always been aware of God’s presence in my life. I believe my life is a gratuitous gift from Him, undeserved, unmerited, unconditionally given. I love the episode where He became man in Jesus Christ and lived among us. Even today, His Spirit guides and directs me in my daily life.

My faith, like my life, is a gift from God. My feeble and finite mind can never hope to embrace the infinitude that is God. My limited mind cannot even begin to embrace the magnitude and plenitude of God. Unless He reveals Himself to me. My inability to fully comprehend God often manifests itself as doubt about what I believe in: Is God really there? Does He really care for me? Is He really the source of all the good things in my life?

Of the good things there in my life, there are three places where I would love to always be. I have been to many beautiful places where I have experienced God’s presence. But nothing beats these three.

I love being in other people’s memories. It is pure joy when Jane tells me, “Lolo, I thought of you in school today;” or when friends call up or send a note to say that they missed me or that we should get together again soon.

I love being in the prayers of other people. Space and time may often separate us from people we hold dear. But we can be truly present to one another when we pray for and with them. In prayers, nothing can separate us from our loved ones.

And I love being in the hearts of people whom I also hold in my heart. Distance or even death may take them away from me physically. But the persons that they are are alive in my heart. Nothing gives me a warmer feeling than knowing and being told I am in the hearts of these people.

Memories. Prayers. Heart. They are beyond space and time. That is where I always want to be with people I love. And beyond space and time is where I also truly encounter and meet my God.

LORD, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?
Psalm 144

Once when Jesus was praying in solitude,
and the disciples were with him,
he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?”
They said in reply, “John the Baptist; others, Elijah;
still others, ‘One of the ancient prophets has arisen.’”
Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
Peter said in reply, “The Christ of God.”
He rebuked them and directed them not to tell this to anyone.
Luke 9:18-22

When Will We Ever Learn?

Today, I pray for all the victims of war and violence in the world. What is happening in Syria and Iraq may seem a world away from where I am. But anything that happens in our global village affects me. And this one makes me utterly sad. I feel violated and outraged with every violent death I read or hear about in the news. And it is even more tragic to see how the response to the violence inflicted upon others is even more violence to stop and eliminate the perpetuators. The Pope recently visited Albania where Muslims and Christians live in harmony and brotherhood, with mutual respect for one another. There is another way. We have an alternative. We have a choice.

And yet, through all the centuries, it seems men have never learned. Herod was piqued by John the Baptist for decrying his adulterous ways. First he had him arrested and jailed; and later he had him killed. In the dark days of Martial Law in the Philippines, people who protested were rounded up in jails and the their leaders salvaged (the local term coined to describe extra-judicial killings.) And in Syria and Iraq, people of a different belief or of different tribes are killed just because they are different.

When will we ever learn?

In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge.
Psalm 90

Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening,
and he was greatly perplexed because some were saying,
“John has been raised from the dead”;
others were saying, “Elijah has appeared”;
still others, “One of the ancient prophets has arisen.”
But Herod said, “John I beheaded.
Who then is this about whom I hear such things?”
And he kept trying to see him.
Luke 9:7-9

Travel Light

Travel light.
It is a lesson I took time in learning.
I used to lug heavy suitcases in my early travels.
Packing things I might need just in case.
Often to find out I don’t need them at all,
Or I can easily get them where I was going.
Eventually, I learned
I could make do without those extra pieces of clothes,
Or I could survive with just a pair of shoes
Or one jacket is all I need.
On learning that, I enjoyed my travels a lot more.

Travel light.
It is a life-lesson I am still learning till now.
I don’t have to lug all the baggages from my past.
I can leave all my hurts and worries behind
And just put them in the good Lord’s hands.
Love and kindness are all I need for the journey
And everything else will be given to me along the way
I can give away everything and I will travel even lighter.
I soon discover that the more I give away
The less I am in want of any thing I need.

Your word, O Lord, is a lamp for my feet.
Psalm 119

Jesus summoned the Twelve and gave them power and authority
over all demons and to cure diseases,

and he sent them to proclaim the Kingdom of God
and to heal the sick.
He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey,
neither walking stick, nor sack, nor food, nor money,
and let no one take a second tunic.
Whatever house you enter, stay there and leave from there.
And as for those who do not welcome you,
when you leave that town,
shake the dust from your feet in testimony against them.”
Luke 9:1-5

My Brothers and My Sisters.

If people would only see others as their brothers or sisters, there would be less prejudice and hatred in this world. Wars will cease and violence against others will stop.

If we would only see every woman as our mother or sister, sexual abuses and exploitation will become unheard of. Every woman will be treated with love and accorded respect and dignity.

If we would only see every man as our father or brother, there will be more openness and willingness to work together. We will be able to build a bright and better world for our children.

If we would only see ourselves as one big family, there will be more sharing and caring among all of us. Hunger and want will vanish for the earth is more than abundant to supply us all our needs.

If I just realize that the beating in my heart that keeps me alive is the same as the rhythm that beats in others; I will learn that we are one and come from the same Source, that indeed we are all brothers and sisters under the Fatherhood of God.

Guide me, Lord, in the way of your commands.
Psalm 119

The mother of Jesus and his brothers came to him
but were unable to join him because of the crowd.
He was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside
and they wish to see you.”
He said to them in reply, “My mother and my brothers
are those who hear the word of God and act on it.”
Luke 8:19-21

Proclaiming the Good News

In this time and age of political correctness, people pay attention to what others do or say and are critical when they offend the sensibilities of others. This is well and good when political correctness comes from a deep respect for the dignity and humanity of the other person. But often I sense a certain condescension in some, thinking that others do not know any better. Or, it is sometimes a subtle dig at others for thinking or acting differently from the commonly accepted norms. And sometimes others are pressured into behaving other than who they really are just to be politically correct. And the biggest incongruity for me is how some people would demand respect and acceptance from others when they would deny these things from foreigners visiting their countries.

There are times I behave in a politically correct manner in order to conform and to be accepted – even to the point of denying who I am or what I stand for. This is like lighting a lamp and hiding it in a jar. In time, my light, my truth dies out. I love this line from Desiderata, “Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.” And this quote from Boris Pasternak, “In every generation there has to be some fool who will speak the truth as he sees it.”

A Christian is somehow who has heard a good news so exciting and liberating that he want to tell the whole world about it.

The just one shall live on your holy mountain, O Lord.
Psalm 15

Jesus said to his disciples,
“No one after lighting a lamp hides it under a jar,
or puts it under a bed,
but puts it on a lamp stand,
so that those who enter may see the light.
For nothing is hidden that will not be disclosed,
nor is anything secret that will not become known and come to light.
Then pay attention to how you listen;
for to those who have, more will be given;
and from those who do not have,
even what they seem to have will be taken away.”
Luke 8:16-18
