Praying For Hope

IMG_1187

Two persons looking at the same picture can see two completely different things. One person may see the dark clouds foreboding a coming storm. Another one will see the interesting interplay of dull and vibrant colors.

I have some friends, both on Facebook and off, who have such a rosy outlook in life. They always see the positive side of things and the goodness there is in people. Oh, they have their share of problems and misfortunes; but they’d see the bright side of such events and all the good that has come out of their previous mishaps.

I also have some friends who bitch and complain just about everything and anything, all the time. Nothing good nor positive things ever seem to happen in their lives. And when some good things do come; they look at them with suspicion and try to see the catch somewhere. They live their days in continuous gloom and portending doom.

We see what we seek. And from the fullness of the heart, the mouth speaks. When we spill our cup, what pours out is what is in the cup. When we take the spills in our life, what comes out is what our hearts and minds are already full of.

Can we choose to be positive or negative? Or, are we naturally of positive or negative disposition. It seems to me that positive people find it easier to be hopeful. Is hope then something we choose to do? Or, is it like faith, a gift?

Whatever, I pray for the gift of Hope.

What Are You Waiting For?

IMG_20120925_120651

Waiting is part of being human.
The longing and yearning somehow humanizes us.
There is something about life today though that is averse to waiting.
We want everything now: instant gratification.
That explains a lot of the anger, anxiety and ambivalence we see today.

I remember watching Becket’s “Waiting for Godot” and experiencing all that angst.
What if God-ot never comes?
What is there is no God-ot?
What is he comes and I do not recognize him?
What am I suppose to do when he comes?
What am I really waiting for?
Why?
It is questions like these that make us human.

Prophets And Hope

IMG_20180404_132507616

The world today is in a very sorry mess. There are more things to be unhappy about than there are to be joyful. If there was indeed a good and all-loving God, one is tempted to ask, “Why doesn’t God fix it?” If I were him, I’d probably say, “Abort! Abort!” I would rain down fire and brimstone on this terrible mess, burn it to ashes and then wash it all away with one gigantic tsunami.

But our God is a God of second chances. God respects our free will. He will allow us to make decisions. And he constantly tells us, “You are worth one more try.” And more than just one time, he has shown that he can draw out goodness out of the most horrible situation.

God sends messengers who constantly remind us to repent, turn back away from our sinful ways, return to God’s loving embrace. But quite often, they are not believed and when their message becomes so believable, they can be no longer ignored, they are arrested and killed. They are called prophets:

A voice of one crying out in the desert:
“Prepare the way of the Lord,
make straight his paths.
Every valley shall be filled
and every mountain and hill shall be made low.
The winding roads shall be made straight,
and the rough ways made smooth,
and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”

And through out the ages, the prophets also proclaim what God has in store for us:

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;
he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;

These are no promises of wealth, power and fame. But the fulfillment of what make us human. This is the foundation of my hope.

Mary, The Prophet

IMG-5baadcbb8820515b47074fefc43c90dc-V

“In every generation, there has to be some fool who will speak the truth as he sees it.”
~ Boris Pasternak

Mary has many title with which we honor her: Mother of God, Queen of Heaven, Co-Redemptrix, Mediatrix of All Graces, Madonna, Blessed Mother. But hardly ever as a Prophet.

Prophets are important persons in the Bible. The usual view of prophets are persons who can foretell the future. I But in the words of Pasternak, they are “fools who speak the truth as they see it.” They see truth clearly and they see the consequences when truth is debased. They see clearly God’s will and plan and can tell its unfolding. And people believe they can see the future when all they do is to speak the truth as it is. And one often has to be a fool to speak the truth, specially if it is contrary to what those in power believe. Just look at John the Baptizer and Jesus himself.

Mary spoke the truth as she saw it. In her song, the Magnificat, she declares the truth and the plan and will of God for his people:

He has mercy on those who fear Him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the humble.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.

In response to God’s call and will, her response was the response of all the prophets who came before her: “May it be done unto me according to thy word.”

In our times, specially now, I hold dear and close to my heart the prophetic words of Mary – that God will scatter the the proud and cast down the mighty who oppress and abuse the humble and the poor whom he will lift up and fill with good things. her words are as relevant and meaningful today as they were thousand of years ago. Her actions are are right path then; they are still now. Goodness will always triumph over evil. light over the darkness and life over death. This truth will set us free and will give us hope. And the hope deep in our hearts will strengthen out faith.

Life and Love

P1050910

It never fails. I watch the sunset and one question keeps repeating itself in my mind: WHY? Why all this awesomeness? Why am I even here? And because I am here, I can enjoy all of this. I realize that because I am alive, anything and everything is possible.

Life is precious and beautiful we would want to keep and preserve it forever; so it does not dissipate or disappear. Something this so inestimable must be meant to last forever. But the truth and paradox is that life is meant to be lived and given away in love and service to others. The more I try to hold and keep it, the more it dissipates and disappears.

The more I give it away in love and service, the fuller and richer it becomes. A rainbow is always a sight to behold. Try to keep and save it by getting to its ‘end’ and it is not there. A rose is a thing of beauty. Try to understand and reproduce its beauty by getting down to its ‘roots’ and you have nothing but the pulse beat of a quark. The sum total of the moments in life that I give away in love and service will define the beauty and joy that there is in my life.

Life is a deep paradox, a maelstrom of contradictions. The good coexists side by side with the evil, joys come along with pain and tears are never far from our smiles and laughter. And all around, life does not at all seem fair: “I tell you, to all those who have, more will be given; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away.”

We sometimes wish for the journey to come to an end soon but it is a long and winding road ahead. I realize that Faith is the greatest gift we can receive from God for the journey – yes, Faith is a gift, a grace, a blessing! Love is the greatest lesson we can learn to make the journey worthwhile and meaningful. And then, we can realistically Hope for everlasting life.

Never Stop Hoping

DSCN6126.JPG

All the wars and violence.
All that anger and hatred fueling them.
All that greed and selfishness.
All the hunger and deprivation caused by them.
All that licentiousness and hedonism.
All the addiction and enslavement they engender.
Are because we have forgotten how to hope.

We refuse to even hope.
We refuse to lift our heads
and look at the glorious morning
breaking on the horizon.
We wallow in our sins and enjoy the mud like pigs.
And in a perverse way, we enjoy it.
There is no need for hope.
We are doomed.
The world is doomed.

Yet, there is that whispering inside us
Saying, every day is an opportunity
To make things better
To transform our sty into paradise.
We must be willing to wait
and while waiting, work.

Our salvation is at hand
and a great light is about to break out in the heavens.

Two Christmas Stories

IMG_20181130_114338 (1)

There are two Christmas stories in the Gospels, one by Luke and the other one by Matthew.

The one by Luke is the story we are most familiar with: baby in a manger wrapped in swaddling clothes, a chorus of angels, shepherds awoken from their sleep by the heavenly sights and sounds. It is a story of hope and joy, of a light shining in the darkness, of a warm comforting glow on a wintry night.

The other Christmas story by Matthew is dark, gloomy and even depressing. It starts with the genealogy of Jesus. While there were heroes and great men among the ancestors of Jesus, there were almost an equal number of heels and scoundrels. The genealogy mentions about five women, most of whom had a colorful and shady past. Even before the birth of the baby, Joseph had in mind to divorce Mary to spare her some shame. When the baby born, there were no angels singing nor shepherds visiting to adore him. Rather, there was King Herod who wanted to have him killed. Already. So, the Holy Family had to flee to Egypt to seek refuge. They were refugees, fugitives from the King. And when they returned, they settled in Nazareth. Apparently they could not return to Bethlehem. This story is dreary compared to the peace and joy in Luke’s gospel.

The Christmas story is also our story. We still live with oppression and persecutions. Refugees, immigrants, displaced persons are still among the burning issues of today. Blatant use of naked power to intimidate, subdue, and coerce people is still acceptable in many places. Even in those places where you wouldn’t expect it. Like in those times, people are still hoping and pining for peace, joy, and a taste of heaven.

When God became man, he fully inserted himself into the human condition. He promised us eternal life; but he also asked that we be ready to take up the cross. We wait in hope that we will be able to bear the cross so that we eventually come into eternal life.

To Be Human Is To Hope

DSCN1243

To hope is to be human.
Man looks at the horizon
Wondering what lies beyond,
And he longs to find out.
Man looks up the sky.
He wants to reach out and soar as high,
Maybe even further than his eyes can see.
Even when man looks into an abyss,
He wants to plumb the depths to discover
what lies deep down under.

To be human is to hope.
To expect for better and bigger things.
To dream of what might be if all pain and tears were to go away.
To long for a time when all expectations come to fruition.
To wish upon a star and invoke the heavens to make it come true.

This is the waiting and the hoping of Advent.
It point to the sacred night when we would feel a thrill of hope.
When our weary hearts will rejoice,
Together with the chorus of angels,
The joy and adoration of the shepherds,
When a glorious morn pierces and drives away
The gloom and darkness of the night.

Even when our hopes are merely whispered
Or when we just seem to be waiting for Godot;
There is something truly palpable in our hearts,
Felt in out hearts and soul
Of something wondrous and truly unexpected
About to burst forth into our lives.

Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb,
and the leopard shall lie down with the kid;
The calf and the young lion shall browse together,
with a little child to guide them.
The cow and the bear shall be neighbors,
together their young shall rest;
the lion shall eat hay like the ox.
The baby shall play by the cobra’s den,
and the child lay his hand on the adder’s lair.
There shall be no harm or ruin on all my holy mountain;
for the earth shall be filled with knowledge of the LORD,
as water covers the sea.

Dark Clouds Over The Horizon

IMG_20170508_155651381

Today’s First Reading:

In days to come,
The mountain of the LORD’s house
shall be established as the highest mountain
and raised above the hills.
All nations shall stream toward it;
many peoples shall come and say:
“Come, let us climb the LORD’s mountain,
to the house of the God of Jacob,
That he may instruct us in his ways,
and we may walk in his paths.”

Dark ominous clouds hover above the Lord’s mountain
Clouds of anger and war.
Clouds of doubts and indifference.
Clouds of hunger and deprivation.
How can we walk in His ways
when we can hardly see His face
And refuse to hear His voice.
Mammon and Lucre have taken over the Lord’s mountain.

For from Zion shall go forth instruction,
and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
He shall judge between the nations,
and impose terms on many peoples.

Many peoples have turned away from the Lord.
Some out of pride; others out of doubts.
Some because of pain and sufferings; others seeking only pleasure.
Some out of anger and hate; others because they are out of love.
Some out of ignorance; others out of willful turning away.

They shall beat their swords into plowshares
and their spears into pruning hooks;
One nation shall not raise the sword against another,
nor shall they train for war again.

Even now the drums of war are beating.
Some nations would impose their will and rule over others.
Some Nations would just grab what belongs to others.
Some subtly make slaves out of other peoples.
Some abuse their neighbors’ weakness and defenselessness.

O house of Jacob, come,
let us walk in the light of the LORD!

Come, You who would sweep the dark clouds away.
Come, You who would bring us the light.
Come, You who would turn our mourning into joy.
Come, You who would give us hearts of flesh once more.
Come, for we cannot get ourselves out of the horrible pit
we have dug ourselves into.

Longing For Cleansing

We burn our garbage and thrash,
Dirty smoke rises into the atmosphere.
The sky takes up all our dirt
Transforms it into clouds, clean and clear.

We throw our wastes into the ocean.
Our rubbish flows into the sea.
The waters washes away all the grime.
And it’s now an ocean blue we see.

What if our filth and toxins
overwhelm the sea and sky;
And their power to purify
would also fade and die?

Who’ll save us then from our pollution?
We’ve brought about our own destruction.
Where do we go to seek our salvation?
We gaze, we wait, searching the horizon.

This is the season for hopeful waiting.
We know that we have sinned.
We cannot clean ourselves of our evil.
Will our redemption come blowing in the wind.
