Filipinos love the underdog. It could be our natural temperament as a people or our deeply rooted Christian upbringing. We just have a soft spot in our hearts for the poor, those who are in need or in pain, those who have no else to turn to. In sports, others would often cheer for the obvious winner. We love to cheer for the small guy or the one less likely to win. In times of calamities, of which we have a lot whether these be natural or man-made, Filipinos readily open their homes, their hearts and their wallets to those affected. In rich countries, many people die of loneliness and neglect. In poorer countries, many people die of hunger. In the Philippines, these events rarely happen for there will always be people who would extend a helping hand. In many countries, women are second class citizens and often discriminated against. The Philippines tops the world when it comes to women’s rights and gender equality. In fact, it is sometimes the men who would cry for gender equality. In many countries, it is not fun being a child. It is more fun being a child in the Philippines, where they are pampered and fussed over often to excesses. I can understand the vehement stand of the Catholic Church against the recently enacted RH law. There is a thinking common in many places that beyond a certain number, children become an economic burden or even a curse. In the Philippines, the birth of child has always been seen and welcomed as a blessing no matter how humble, needy or unfortunate the circumstances.

Today is the Feast of the Holy Innocents, babies massacred by a jealous insecure king. In the Philippines, this day has become the local April fools day when people play tricks on one another in the fashion that the Three Magi played a trick on King Herod to save the life of the Child Jesus, which tragically led to the massacre of the Holy Innocents. I reflect and am moved at how saving one such innocent life can lead to a world-changing event later on. I believe Filipinos have such a deep respect for life because we know that God has a purpose for making each happen. God’s plan for the universe unfolds with each one of us playing a role, no matter how humble or how great. In fact, one great insight I have come across is that every child that is born is a sign that God has not lost hope in humanity.

When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, he was infuriated, and he sent and killed all the children in and around Bethlehem who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had learned from the wise men. Then was fulfilled what had been spoken through the prophet Jeremiah: “A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled, because they are no more.” Matthew 2:13-18

A New Order Is Born At Christmas Time

At Christmas time, a new world order is born and the old one is passing away.

The human economy is built on scarcity of resources, on limited and limiting needs and wants. The divine economy is built on abundance and fullness as in “of his fullness we have all received”. There will be no more needs and wants as graces and blessings will be ours in abundance andĀ  pressed down, shaken together and running over. In the simplicity of the manger, God brought the whole universe together. In the human economy, there is a lot of waste and garbage. In the divine economy, nothing is ever wasted. Everything carries the seed of something better and new. Even the smallest of things can be the beginning of something great. The child in the manger will change the world like the world has never experienced before. Exclusions, limitations and expiry dates are all part and parcel of the human economy. There will be no exclusions in the divine economy. Everyone is welcome and everything will have a use. The sky will not even be the limit as there will be a new heaven and a new earth. The goods, that is graces and blessings, are good for all eternity – no expiry dates.

As I see all of this coming to pass at Christmas, I pray for a new heart made for abundance not scarcity. I pray for a new spirit built to welcome all and everything and not excluding anyone or rejecting anything. I pray for an upgrade of my memory so that I will remember all the good things that the Lord has done for me.

Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death; and you will be hated by all because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. Matthew 10:17-22

Christmas Blessings: Presence and Freedom

DSCN2321

Christmas is about Presence and Freedom.

Many, many years ago, people saw God as a distant unreachable Lord, who ruled the heavens and the earth from on high. Through Christmas, God has blessed our lot by sharing in our humanity. Through the mystery of Christmas, God has revealed himself as loving Father, dutiful Son and life-giving Spirit. He has always been present in creation and throughout history; but through the Incarnation he has given his presence a human face. Through the gift of life, he has also made us present to him. Presence starts with an awareness I am not alone. There is someone else aside from myself. The awareness soon becomes a relationship. I and other have a lot to talk about and do together. Relationships then become the source and fountainhead of a community. And the most essential of communities is the family where the festivities of Christmas are meaningfully celebrated.

When God became present to us, he did not come in wind or thunder, nor as a mighty and powerful conqueror. He chose to come as a child, tender gentle and mild. And even his birth was made possible by Mary’s Fiat to be the handmaid of the Lord and Joseph’s consent to take on Mary as his wife. The Holy Family is a community of freedom, of choices and decisions to accept God’s presence and invitation to a relationship. The Child born of Christmas day will grow up to proclaim his gospel of freedom to captives, those enslaved by sin and their inordinate passion.

There are many who would say there is no child in the manger. Many would have the Christ stricken out of Christmas. Indeed, the Child will come and be present only when he is welcomed in freedom in the manger of my heart.

From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father’s heart, who has made him known. John 1:1-18

Groaning and Moaning for the Morning

The Newtown massacre was a tragic event of humongous proportions. It is ironic that it should happen just a few weeks before the joyous celebration of Christmas. But this tragic event is symptomatic of the malaise the world is suffering from, all the anger and hatred, all the pain and sufferings that the anger and hatred cause, all the uncertainties and fears that these engender. In many places, brothers are oppressing and even killing brothers. Fathers are abusing children, specially daughters. Nations are trying to annihilate other nations. And everywhere, there is hunger, misery and disease for which we have the resources to wipe out. Even in the most progressive of peoples and nations, there is political gridlock because leaders cannot decide for want of trust and confidence in other leaders. As a result panic and uncertainty rule the markets and businesses and corporations grab what they can in unmitigated self-interest and greed to the detriment of ordinary people and families.

This is the world today, moaning and groaning for liberation from fear and uncertainty, from the anger and the hatred, from all the greed and selfishness, from all the pride and callousness, from all the uncaring individualism. This is the world today, pining and yearning for love, hope, peace and joy. This is the world today, praying and waiting for a Savior. The cynics among us will tell us: “There is no savior and there is no hope. We ware all doomed, plunging headlong into our own annihilation which for the most part has been self-inflicted.” And if one were to look around at what is happening today, there are many reasons and indications that they might be right.

And the Savior came – only to prove the cynics right. He was born in a stable and had a manger for a bed, because there was no room elsewhere for him. He should have been born in a palace or at least the mansionĀ  of some royalty. He would then have a chance of growing to be another, Cyrus the Great or another Alexander the Great or another Caesar. Then, by his sheer will, power and might he would vanquish all the bad guys for good. But he came as a helpless and hapless baby. In attendance were the animals in the stable and the poor shepherds from the nearby fields. And yet, and here is where many of us miss the whole point, this child has brought us the glad tidings of love, hope, joy and peace by coming the way he did. He did not come in power and might to impose his will upon us. But he came only with our consent. It started with Mary’s Fiat and Joseph’s trusting faith. He came not as a conquering hero to impose his will upon us but as a child for us to accept and bring freely into our life. Thus by saying Yes to him, his followers and believers have been lighting candles of hope, love, joy and peace – one candle at a time – to dispel the darkness brought about by anger, hatred, despair, pain and suffering.

It is Christmas time.

“By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” Luke 1:67-79

Retelling and Rewriting the Gospels

Image

Christmas has always been an endearing and enduring story of love, peace, joy and hope. In Mary, we feel the love that a mother has for her child bearing everything to bring him into the world. In the Child Jesus, we see the hope for a better world for here is the Messiah who will change the world. In that stable and in the face of Joseph, we experience peace in the midst of the flurry then of people going about being registered in compliance with an imperial edict. And in the face of the shepherds and the angels who brought them the message, there is joy at this wondrous moment. They probably did not fully understand what was happening but there was joy in their faces.

The story, together with the entire gospel, has been re-told, re-written and proclaimed over and over again throughout the years. Even today, we have to create our own Christmas story. We have to re-write the gospels for our times.

This is the image of Our Lady of La Vang, venerated among Catholics in Vietnam. She looks very Asian. The Madonna of Juan Diego, venerated among Mexicans, looks like one of the native Indians of Mexico. And so it is where ever there has been a Mariam apparition, the Lady appears like one of the natives. But always, her message is the same: the love, peace, hope and joy that she felt when she gave birth to her Son.

Mary did nothing to deserve the singular honor to be the Mother of God. But here response made all the difference. With her Fiat, she allowed God to come fully into her life and she did so with full trust and fidelity. I did nothing to deserve the life I have. I pray that I will be like Mary and say Yes to God with full trust and fidelity. And I will share the true meaning of Christmas – Love, Peace, Joy and Hope – to all the people I encounter in this life I have been gifted with.

“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.” Luke 1:39-45

My Soul Magnifies the Lord

Image

For all the posturings that Filipino men do, I still believe that Philippines society is essentially a matriarchal one. In many Filipino homes, the father brings home the bacon but it is the mother who cooks it and still holds the purse strings. Behind all the great family fortunes in the country, there was always an enterprising woman somewhere in the history of that family. I have taught in some of the country’s top schools to know that many of the ‘macho’ Filipino leaders and prominent persons are Mama’s boys. It took more than a decade to get the RH Bill enacted into law. But when push came to shove, the whole cabal of macho senators backed by bishops invoking hellfire and brimstone were no match for two feisty women-senators.

it is sad how women still suffer discrimination and exploitation to this very day. There are still societies where women are considered as chattel. Even in advanced societies like the US, women also still experience subtle discrimination as in walls of exclusions or glass ceilings of limitations. It rankles feminists no end how men can pretend to make laws governing women’s bodies, for example.

The Bible, specially the Gospels, is replete with stories championing the cause of women. (Although there are stories that are discriminatory, reflecting the cultural mores of the times and milieu during which they were written.) No story is more inspiring than the story of Mary, a simple girl thrust into the center of cosmic events, giving her Fiat to all that was happening to her, keeping these things in her heart. Her Magnificat stands out for its deep spirituality, profound wisdom and universal significance.

And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.” Luke 1:46-56

I Was Born For Greater Things

Life is full of challenges and surprises. There are times I give in to cynicism and say “This too will pass away but it will never get better. There will just be another disappointment.” Yet, time and time again, things do in fact get better over time. Adults demand proofs and evidence all the time before they believe something to be real or good. For children, the words and the assurance of a loved one is sufficient. I pray that I have the faith of children to believe in the words and assurances of God. He has called me by name and formed me in my mother’s womb. He already know the great spirit that I will become in eternity while I still struggle through the process of becoming. I pray for the grace and blessing to allow this process to unfold as it should and not hinder nor frustrate it.

“And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.” Luke 1:39-45

Counting My Blessings

It is often in times of tragedy, of terrible loss or sadness that people turn to God or ask the question: “Where is God?” Rare are the instances where the people would seek and see God in times of great joy, of unbounded happiness and deep satisfaction. For all the order that we see in the universe, it is a noisy and chaotic place: galaxies ever exploding and expanding, stars continuously burning, comets and planets constantly colliding. For all the troubles and turmoil there is in the world, still there are glorious sunrises, beautiful sunsets, people caring and sharing, families loving and creating their own heaven on earth.

There are moments I wish I was always in control of everything in my life: where and how I live, who the people in my life are and the events I would allow to happen in my life. But these things are not within my control. So, I wake up every morning realizing I have been given another day to live. I am grateful. I go to bed at the end of the day, aware I have had another day of being with people dear to me. I am happy and grateful. I did not have to do anything to have a rainbow bless my day yesterday or flowers to brighten it. I am delighted and happy. I did not lift a finger and yet there are people coming and going in my life to make each moment worth whatever the bother. I am happy and grateful. My life is full of blessings. In prayer, I become aware of all these blessings and it is the occasion for me to say “Yes” and “Amen” to all that life has to offer: the good times and the bad times, the happy and the sad, the disappointing and the glad. It is great just to be alive. Yes! Amen!

Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her. Luke 1:26-38

Angels Are Everywhere

I have had a blessed life, a journey that has been rich in blessings. These blessings are brought to me daily by the people in my life. When I look at Anabelle, our three sons, Kathleen, Jonathan and Jane; I am always filled with humility and gratitude and often end up asking: “What have I done to deserve all of them in my life?” Then, there are our extended family and many relatives who have been with us through most of our journeying. In good times and in bad times. There are our many wonderful friends without whom we would not probably have gone this far on our journey nor without whom the journey would not have been half the fun. If angels are messengers sent by God to deliver his message to me, these people are the angels in my life. Through them, I know that I am loved. There are more. I have also been had people in my life who for the most part have remained anonymous, perhaps encountered but fleetingly and often serendipitously, who have helped me along and influenced the course of my life. They too are angels sent to me to deliver a message – that I am loved.

Zechariah, father of John the Baptist, received the message about the coming birth of his son through the message of the angel Gabriel. This happened when he was alone in prayer and offering incense inside the Holy of Holies. It is also when I am alone and in prayer that I come to realize who the angels in my life are and the message they have been sent to deliver to me. It is in prayer that I come to know I am surrounded by angels and who the angels in my life are.

Then there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. When Zechariah saw him, he was terrified; and fear overwhelmed him. But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard. Luke 1:5-25

God Writes Straigth With Crooked Lines

There was once an engaged couple. He was much older than the girl, she being only in her early teens. Later, it was found out that she was pregnant even before they could get married. And he was not even the father. He wanted to break off the engagement but he married her anyway and raised the boy as his own. But the boy grew up to be a rabble-rouser and a trouble maker. He really got the authorities pissed off with his insulting speeches, calling them names like ‘hypocrites’, ‘brood of vipers’, ‘white-washed sepulchers’. He surrounded himself with the outcasts of society from whom he recruited his henchmen. Eventually, the authorities had him arrested and he was executed as a common criminal. Today’s conventional wisdom would have encouraged the mother to have had an abortion as a solution to this tragedy.

Just another sad story? No, it turned out to be the greatest story ever told. The words of this rabble-rouser have inspired millions through the centuries, moving them to do heroic deeds, sacrifice their lives and change the course of history in many and different instances. The deeds of this trouble maker have served as inspiration for people to change their lives to serve others and make this world a better place to live in. His death was not the end but the beginning of a new life where “He will wipe every tear from their eyes; there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.” He is Emmanuel, God with us. He came to save us from ourselves and bring us into intimate communion with him.

Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: “Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means, “God is with us.” When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife. Matthew 1:18-24
