Remembering 9/11

9/11 is forever etched in the collective consciousness not only of Americans but of the entire world. What kind of hatred so strong would drive people to do something so utterly vicious? As the world watched in total disbelief as those planes crashed into the twin towers of the World Center, people were wondering, “Where is God in all of this insanity?” I was so stunned that day, I thought I saw the Satan’s face. And I do not want to see him again, ever.

I want to remember that day in the faces of the responders to the scene, full of heroism and courage. They risked their lives, and some lost theirs, to save others. I want to believe God was moving among the debris, which was not His making, inspiring people to great heights of love and concern for the victims. I saw His Presence in the tremendous outpouring of sympathy  for those injured and of worldwide condemnation for the perpetrators. While it all happened because of the evil there was in some people, it also brought the best and all the goodness in many others.

And carnage continues. Today, even as we remember 9/11, many innocent people are losing and have lost their lives and homes in Iraq and Syria. I find it so ridiculous how fully armed men would be so afraid of unarmed and defenseless people as to end their lives whom they see as threats to their flimsy beliefs. And I again ask, “Where is God in all this insanity?” Definitely, not in the those would take the lives of the innocents. In the faces perhaps of those who would rather die than acquiesce to evil? In those hearts of those who cherish their beliefs even if it meant death. In the courage of those who have chosen to stay behind and minister to those afflicted by the conflict. In the unwavering love in families who stayed together in the face of such adversity.

It is a troubled and troubling world we live in. There are so many things that are not right. There is so much hatred and evil all around. Still in all, I believe there is more good than evil in this world. There are more people who would rather love and do good than those who would hate and do harm to others. There is more courage in the daily living than in taking the life out of others. There is greater generosity in homes and villages than than the greed we read daily in the news. There is more joy shared among people than enmity that would divide them. There is more that binds in our common humanity than the petty differences that would keep us apart. I write these words not out of a superficial religiosity trying to make sense of the absurdity I see around me. It is the reality I see in my everyday, ordinary life. In my family. In our neighborhood. In our community.

Guide me, Lord, along the everlasting way.
Psalm 139

Jesus said to his disciples:
“To you who hear I say, love your enemies,
do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you,
pray for those who mistreat you.
To the person who strikes you on one cheek,
offer the other one as well,
and from the person who takes your cloak,
do not withhold even your tunic.
Give to everyone who asks of you,
and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back.
Do to others as you would have them do to you.
For if you love those who love you,
what credit is that to you?
Even sinners love those who love them.
Luke 6:27–32

Signposts Along the Journey

Being poor is not good; neither is being hungry.
Life is not meant to be spend in weeping and in sorrow.
Hatred, insults, evil and persecutions are not what life is made of.
Life is meant to be enjoyed, celebrated and be thankful for.

These trails and tribulations are but signposts
that mark and guide our journey.
They are not our destination.
They merely point us the way.
Being poor prepares us for when we come into the fullness of life.
Being hungry moves us forward to where our hunger will be satisfied.
Our tears and our sorrows will be turned into tears of joy and laughter,
For that is what happens when we finally arrive home:
No more hatred, no more persecutions,
Evil is finally vanquished
And we will spend our days in joyful and grateful celebration.

Listen to me; see and bend your ear.
Psalm 45

Raising his eyes toward his disciples Jesus said:
“Blessed are you who are poor,
for the Kingdom of God is yours.
Blessed are you who are now hungry,
for you will be satisfied.
Blessed are you who are now weeping,
for you will laugh.
Blessed are you when people hate you,
and when they exclude and insult you,
and denounce your name as evil
on account of the Son of Man.
Rejoice and leap for joy on that day!
Behold, your reward will be great in heaven.
For their ancestors treated the prophets
in the same way.”
Luke 6:20-23

Called and Created to be Unique

Each human person is unique. I am one of a kind and there is no other one like me, never was and never will be. I am complete by myself and I have everything I need in me to become fulfilled. . What I am is not something that has been taken away from or denied of somebody else. Something I see different in others and may sometimes wish I had is not something that was taken away from me. All of these realities are telling me that life is so rich that it would take billions of iterations and variations to fully express all of its possibilities.

When I was growing up, we lived besides some wonderful neighbors who, to me, had everything I would sometimes wish we also enjoyed: good food, nice clothes, a car and a TV set! But I did not do so out of envy for I was also too busy and happy enjoying what I had in my life. In fact, I was happy seeing how wonderful their life was. It showed me that there are alternative lifestyles other than the one I was enjoying. I was happy that when I looked across from our house, there was the sight of a beautiful house right there for me to enjoy and there were our pretty neighbors for me to admire.

And years later, I would get to meet my neighbors again. We are all grown up now and share the memories of our youth. It turns out it was the small things we shared that we we remembered most. Happiness was a warm pan de sal filled with coco jam. A soda was a special treat for special occasions, like when we were recovering from a fever! Different lives. One and the same happiness.

We were and are called into life. And each life is unique. There lies the utter beauty and mystery of our existence. We come from the same infinite source but differently and uniquely expressed. And each one of us is infinitely precious in God’s sight. I have come to truly realize this truth in prayer.

The Lord takes delight in his people.
Psalm 149

Jesus departed to the mountain to pray,
and he spent the night in prayer to God.

When day came, he called his disciples to himself,
and from them he chose Twelve, whom he also named Apostles:
Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew,
James, John, Philip, Bartholomew,
Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus,
Simon who was called a Zealot,
and Judas the son of James,
and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
Luke 6:12-16

Praying With the Heart

Life must have been very difficult for Mary. An innocent maiden in her early teens, she receives a vision that she will bear a son who will be the messiah. And she wonders since she “knows not a man”. She gets betrothed and she is found to be with child even before the marriage – a definitely scandalous situation in an extremely patriarchal society, enough grounds to call off the betrothal. Then, she gives birth in a stable. Then, she loses her child when he was just seven years old. Then, he lives in her house until he is thirty-ish, at which time he becomes an itinerant preacher. And then he brings her more heartaches as he stirs up the hopes of the poor, the outcasts and the dregs of society and makes enemies of the powers that be. In the end, she sees her son crucified as an ordinary criminal -hanging on a cross.

Through it all, she stayed. In spite of all the tribulations in her life, she was always there for him. She could still sing, “The Almighty has done great things for me.” Despite all the troubles her son was stirring up and the enemies he was creating, she kept her faith and trust in him. She tells those who would listen, “Do whatever he tells you.” How did she do it? Simple. “His mother treasured all these things in her heart.”

In her heart. In silence. In prayer, Mary kept these things in her heart. God spoke to her, and to us, through our hearts – that most tender and most sensitive part deep inside, as when we say “Have a heart.” That is where He abides in love.  The heart is also the strongest and toughest part in us. As when we say “Take courage.” We face up to life’s trials and vicissitudes with heart. In prayer, we see our difficulties turn into blessings; our misfortunes become the mighty deeds through which God declares His presence in our lives. He takes our tears and turns them into joy.

Mary has shown us the way – in our heart, in silence, in prayer.

With delight, I rejoice in the Lord.
Psalm 13

When Mary, the mother of Jesus, was betrothed to Joseph,
but before they lived together;
she was found with child through the Holy Spirit.
Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man,
yet unwilling to expose her to shame,
decided to divorce her quietly.
Such was his intention when, behold,
the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,
“Joseph, son of David,
do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home.
For it is through the Holy Spirit
that this child has been conceived in her.
She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus,
because he will save his people from their sins.”
Matthew 1:18-23

Through the Darkness

P1100518

Winter is coming and the darkness is slowly moving in.
There are tribulations of all sorts everywhere.
And somehow, somewhere, they are all interconnected.
The persistent drought in California is due to climate change.
Climate change is happening because we have severely polluted our planet
Earth is groaning from all the mess we have created.
The mess have come from our crass materialism and unmitigated consumerism.
We want more and more of everything, gutting earth out of resources.
This state of affairs have created situations
Where some people have more than what they need – much, much more.
And others barely have anything to get by.
This iniquity and inequality have created enmity among people.
There is anger and hate among those who don’t have against those who have.
There is fear and loathing among those who have against those who don’t.

I am caught adrift in such tempestuous state of affairs.
My heart bleeds for the many Christians suffering persecution in the Middle East.
I am enraged by the barbarism and cruelty of the extremists and terrorists.
I am continuously appalled by the greed and pride in Wall Street.
I cannot comprehend how the appetite for power can be so insatiable.
The world needs changing but what can I do?

The winter is coming but I can make the place where I am a little bit warmer.
The darkness is setting in but the moon can lighten up even the darkest night.
I can give small blessings instead of cursing big time.
I can choose to give love instead of giving in to hatred and anger.
I indulge myself less so I save some to help satisfy others.
I can live with lesser clothes, with lesser food, with less of everything
So that I can have more for sharing and for giving.

The genius and heart of Michael Jackson:
“Maybe you and I can’t do great things
We may not change the world in one day
But we still can change some things today
In our small way”

Such small ways, done with others gathered together in God’s name,
will create ripples that will create the waves
that will serve to tilt the tipping point
for goodness to finally triumph over evil,
for love to win over hate and
for life to finally overcome death.

If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
Psalm 95

Jesus said to his disciples:
“Again, amen, I say to you,
if two of you agree on earth
about anything for which they are to pray,
it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father.
For where two or three are gathered together in my name,
there am I in the midst of them.”
Matthew 18:19-20

Man: an Embodied-Consciousness-With-Others-In-The-World.

One of my favorite quotes from my class in Existential Phenomenology is this: Man is an embodied-consciousness-with-others-in-the-world. This is the basic truth of my existence. I am here. I am here with others. I and the others share but one world. I am part of the truth that is our existence and I know it without any need of proof that I am indeed here.

There is beauty in this world. I go on a nature walk and I see beauty all round me: the majestic towering trees, the riotous explosion of colors of flowers in full bloom, the perennial freshness of the green grass, the limitless expanse of the blue sky. At night I look up the same sky and I see the twinkling of a billions stars, the thrilling sight of comets and falling stars, the romantic waxing and waning of the moon, the gentle swaying of the trees as the cool night breeze passes by. And as I am immersed in all of that beauty, I know that I am part of it all and I need no proof to tell me that I live in and with beauty.

There is goodness in the world. It is good that I am here. It is good that beauty surrounds me. But more than that, I see goodness in the life and lives that thrive around me. I see goodness in people gathering together in love and brotherhood. I see goodness in young couple living together and bringing up a family. I see goodness when people share what they have, what they do and what they are with others. And when I see all of this goodness, I know that I am part of it all and need no proof to tell me that goodness exists.

I see the truth, the beauty and the goodness there is in the world. I know I am part of that scene. This is all there for me to exist and partake of that truth, beauty and goodness. And I am here to share my own truth, beauty and goodness with others in this world.

The Lord is near to all who call upon him.
Psalm 145

While Jesus was going through a field of grain on a sabbath,
his disciples were picking the heads of grain,
rubbing them in their hands, and eating them.
Some Pharisees said,
“Why are you doing what is unlawful on the sabbath?”
Jesus said to them in reply,
“Have you not read what David did
when he and those who were with him were hungry?
How he went into the house of God, took the bread of offering,
which only the priests could lawfully eat,
ate of it, and shared it with his companions?”
Then he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the sabbath.”
Luke 6:1-5

Heaven is a Feast

We Filipinos love fiestas. We would gather together to celebrate all the major holidays with a grand feast. And in between, we need only the flimsiest of excuses to get together and go on an eating binge. Somebody leaves, even if it is just a short out-of-town trip, and there is a despedida party. Another one returns, specially long-lost friends or family, and it is the occasion of a grand bienvenida. Birthdays, anniversaries, promotions, new house, a Gilas or an Askal ballgame, a Manny Pacquiao fight and yes even wakes and funerals – they are all opportunities for a feast and food, lots of it.

But even though there is a lot of food, food is but an excuse for a deeper reason – the Filipino’s need to connect and stay connected with loved ones. In between gobs of food, there are stories to be shared; connections to be made or strengthened; good news to be announced; sad stories to shed some tears over; new friends to meet; new family members to introduce. A fiesta is the Filipino heaven.

And inversely, heaven must be a feast. Christ often portrayed the Kingdom of Heaven as a feast, a banquet. Right now, I am mourning the death of a dear friend, Joemar. He succumbed to lung cancer yesterday at the prime of his life. He is one person who loved to eat and party – be it in an intimate small group or a big bash. He would always be the life of the party with his witty and funny remarks. He loved to tell stories and was a good listener at the same time. Up to the last moment, he was filled with optimism and positivity even as he was gasping his last breath. He loved food. He loved life. And he lived it to the fullest. There has been a tremendous outpouring of love and sympathy from family and friends, whose lives he has touched. Even as they grieve, they remember fondly, with a knowing smile and gladness in their hearts, how Joemar has lived his life to the fullest. I can imagine him now enjoying the eternal feast in heaven.

The salvation of the just comes from the Lord.
Psalm 37

The scribes and Pharisees said to Jesus,
“The disciples of John the Baptist fast often and offer prayers,
and the disciples of the Pharisees do the same;
but yours eat and drink.”
Jesus answered them, “Can you make the wedding guests fast
while the bridegroom is with them?
But the days will come, and when the bridegroom is taken away from them,
then they will fast in those days.”
Luke 5:33-35

Catcher in the Right

I once dreamed of being a called, like Peter, to be a catcher of men. But the Lord had a better plan for me; in fact, many plans. Today, I am a catcher of growing kids. I literally caught Jonathan and Jane as they were growing up as babies. As toddlers, I often caught them as they fell countless times learning first how to crawl and then how to walk. Then I was catching their interminable questions as their curiosity blossomed and bloomed when they started exploring and discovering the world around them. Now, I am catching their feelings and emotions as they unlock and uncover their inner selves and begin to identify and define who the persons they are.

In a reality, Jonathan and Jane are also catchers, specially now they are becoming their own persons. Even as I try to catch their behavior and try to steer them to what is good and true, they catch my cues and learn and in the process become. They catch my ideas and they learn. Jonathan catches his Dad’s pun-ny remarks and he is growing with a cheesy sense of humor. Jane catches her Mom’s sensitivity and she is growing with such artistic flair. The values and attitudes they will carry in life are not only taught them but they also catch these from the milieu they grow in.

I guess in the end, we are all catchers, right? Like the flu bug when it is in season, we catch what is in the air and pass it on. Not to be afraid, for as a human being I can choose and decide what I pass on. The atmosphere around me may be full of anger and hatred. I choose to pass on love and kindness. The air I breath may have the stench of pain and despair. I choose to pass on peace and hope. I may live in a milieu filled with greed and selfishness, I will choose to be generous and giving. To be able to do all these, I need to catch God’s grace every morning in prayer.

To the Lord belongs the earth and all that fills it.
Psalm 24

When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the knees of Jesus and said,
“Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.”

For astonishment at the catch of fish they had made seized him
and all those with him,
and likewise James and John, the sons of Zebedee,
who were partners of Simon.
Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid;
from now on you will be catching men.”
When they brought their boats to the shore,
they left everything and followed him.
Luke 5:8–11

From Minutes to Moments

Everyday, at the daybreak as I wake up,
another one thousand four hundred forty minutes are placed into my cup
to spend and to use for myself,
in this here and now,
with others in this world.

In the peace and quiet of the early morning,
before the hustle and bustle of the day begin,
I take a few of these minutes
and turn them into moments
with my heavenly Father
in prayer.

Moments in prayer make the rest of my minutes sacred.
Minutes are spent through out the day and are gone forever.
Moments with God are saved and they make my life go forever.

I allocate my minutes to my different activities:
a time for exertion and a time for rest,
a time to eat and a time to burn those calories,
a time for Facebook and a time for face to face encounters,
a time for writing and a time for reading,
a time for loving and a time for being mean,
a time for bumbling and a time for making amends.

But my moments of prayer are timeless.
There are no ticking seconds that lapse into minutes.
There is only an abiding Presence
that neither fades nor goes away.
There is perpetual and enduring Breath around me,
the Spirit who whispers in my ear tenderly,
“Be still and know I am God.”
And I just keep still and listen
in this timeless moment.

Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own.
Psalm 33

At daybreak, Jesus left and went to a deserted place.
The crowds went looking for him, and when they came to him,
they tried to prevent him from leaving them.
But he said to them, “To the other towns also
I must proclaim the good news of the Kingdom of God,
because for this purpose I have been sent.”
And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
Luke 4:42–44

Words of Life

I have always been enamored with words. I simply love words. There is beauty to the sound of words when they are strung together in a story, a poem or a song. There is power in words when they are used to describe a thing or a reality or an event; or when they are put together in a speech and its peroration. There is wonder when words are able to communicate to others the thoughts that are bubbling in my mind or the emotions that are beating in my heart.

Words are both magical and mystical. Together with their imaginations, men have used words to describe magical worlds that can only exist in the mind, possibilities that are yet to be. With words, God created the entire universe and everything that is in it. And God said, “Let there be light!” and there was light. And the greatest mystical mystery is when the Word was made flesh and dwelt amongst us.

Words can create and build up but they can also destroy. They make a sad man happy but they can also sadden a happy man. I will strive to recognize the beauty and the power there in in my words. I will speak blessings instead of curses. I will speak words of life and love instead of words of death and hatred. And speaking my words of life, love and blessings, I shall be doing my small share in making and creating this world a better place to live in.

The Lord is just in all his ways.
Psalm 145

In the synagogue there was a man with the spirit of an unclean demon,
and he cried out in a loud voice,

“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?
Have you come to destroy us?
I know who you are–the Holy One of God!”
Jesus rebuked him and said, “Be quiet! Come out of him!”
Then the demon threw the man down in front of them
and came out of him without doing him any harm.
They were all amazed and said to one another,
“What is there about his word?
For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits,
and they come out.”
And news of him spread everywhere in the surrounding region.
Luke 4:31-37
