Jesus said to his disciples:
“When they bring you before the synagogues, the rulers, and the authorities,
do not worry about how you are to defend yourselves or what you are to say;
for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that very hour what you ought to say.”
~ Luke 12:11-12
Fr. Abe once told me that a theologian does his work with the newspapers on one hand and the bible on the other. Today I scanned the newspapers to see where the Spirit is blowing:
- “Global Deal Reached to Curb Chemical That Warms Planet” ~ New York Times
This will keep our planet beautiful, the skies and the seas blue, the valleys and the mountains green. - “Silicon Valley is pouring money into efforts to repeal California’s death penalty” ~ Los Angeles Times. Here’s to a Restorative Justice and to a Culture of Life, instead of a Culture of Death.
-
“Children in Calais Jungle to arrive in UK ‘in days'” ~ BBC News. Putting into practice the Gospel: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.”
- “Canada Just Wants To #TellAmericaItsGreat” ~ NPR. The good neighbor crosses the street to remind the US of her basic goodness even as the nation is slogging through what feels like the most contentious presidential election in decades.
- “Day of prayer, thanksgiving: Bohol remembers 2013 quake” ~ Philippine Daily Inquirer. It was a terrible disaster but even in such a calamity, people of faith still find something to be thankful for.
“Lord, in the face of evil help us see your goodness;
in the face of ugliness help us see your beauty;
in the face of all the lies help us see your truth;
in the face of death and destruction help us see you Spirit of life and light.”
