Looking Deep Inside

IMG_20181113_163926

From today’s First Reading:
But how can they call on him in whom they have not believed?
And how can they believe in him of whom they have not heard?
And how can they hear without someone to preach?
And how can people preach unless they are sent?
~ Romans 10:14-15

In every life, there is a story pleading to be told.
In every heart, there is a yearning crying to be fulfilled.
In every soul, there is a people there is a consciousness shouting to be unleashed.

There are storytellers who see the story and tell what everyone has known all along,
There are prophets who are able to proclaim what we feel deeply in our innermost.
There are leaders who speak the truth about us that we are often afraid to face.

I have met storytellers, prophets, and leaders in my life
who have inspired, formed and pushed me into action all these years.
I have also strove to be one myself – a prophet, a poet, a fool.

It is a thrilling an never-ending story.
It is a profound yearning that is never quenched.
It is a universal consciousness that is in each one of us.

Behind the story and the longing and the awareness
is the fact that we are all one,
yet striving to be different and unique.

Aha life!
Ah, Life!

Some Random Thoughts

IMG_20180414_095119284

In my youth I loved to collect sayings and quotations.
One of my all-time favorite is this one from The Little Prince:
“One sees rightly only with the heart. What is essential is invisible to the eyes.”
And quite related to that is this one from Blaise Pascal:
“The heart has its reasons which reason itself does not understand.”

Our senses are our windows to the world.
In computerese, they are our input devices
through which we gather data and information.
But our senses can sometimes deceive and even limit our perception.
With faith , I can see more of the world around me and the meaning there is
– sometimes even with my eyes closed, specially with my eyes closed.
All I need is to keep still and be silent.

Hunger and thirst drive men to seek food and water to survive.
Without food and water, man would perish and die.
Yet when this basic hunger and thirst for food and water is satisfied,
men seek to quench a deeper hunger and thirst in order to thrive.
Primal hunger and thirst tell us we lack something to keep on living.
Human hunger and thirst tell us we need something more than just food and water
to make life worth living.

Disturbing Thoughts

P1550273

Business and finance.
Power and politics.
Science and technology.
Entertainment and leisure.
These are things that seems  to be driving the world today.
Much of the news is about these
and events in these areas always hog the headlines.

But life is much richer than these.
We need to celebrate and to preserve the beauty that there is in nature.
We need to celebrate families and small communities where love lives and is nurtured.
We need to celebrate the arts through which the human spirit is uplifted.
We need to celebrate our faith which gives us a glimpse of what we truly are.

Poverty and wars are a scandal because we have the resources
and the wherewithal to banish these twin scourges forever.
Last year saw a record number of billionaires in the world.
And last year alone, their collective wealth increased by $762 billion.
According to Oxfam, (a confederation of independent charitable organizations
focusing on the alleviation of global poverty)
that amount is enough to end extreme poverty seven times over.

Many of us are lonely and afraid, this in spite of the fact that
we have never been more interconnected than today.
Yet there are so many of us willing and able to lend a hand
and give comfort to one another.
All we need to do is to cross that road
or to reach out and extend a helping hand to that stranger
or person in dsstress.

There is so much frenzied activity with people in a hurry to get to nowhere.
People are busy doing nothing,
We need to stop and listen,
be touched and be moved and be changed
by the presence of others and of God in our lives.

Nature And My Nature

P1550322Everything in nature is governed by the laws of nature.
What goes up must come down.
Everything breaks down or dies eventually.
Every living thing is driven by and blindly follows its instincts.
There is beauty in the sunflower always turning its face to the sun.
But it is pure natural law and instinct that makes it do that.
It is autumn and trees shed leaves in a wild profusion of colors.
Winter comes and birds and butterflies migrate to warmer climes.
Even the cells and organs in my body are driven and governed by instincts.
Antibodies are automatically mobilized when my body is invaded by pathogens. Digestive juices and enzymes are secreted whenever eat to process my food intake.
My body instinctively repairs itself when I rest and go to sleep.
And yet the sum total of all these cells and organs, which is the person that is me,
has the freedom not to be driven by instincts.
When I get hungry, I can choose not to eat, or what to eat, or how much to eat.
When I get tired, I can choose to rest or go on working to finish any task at hand.
When in heat, animals just succumb to their sexual drives.
I can sublimate mine.
While everything else eventually breaks down and dies,
I shall live forever.
This may sound hard to believe to some, or even many.
But my freedom is one sure sign I shall live forever.
This is my nature with which God has endowed me.

King. Prophet. Priest.

img_20180908_095427.jpg

King. Prophet. Priest.
These are the offices that the Church ascribes to the Christ.

In a world of democratically elected leaders,
who are savvy in social media to keep them attuned
to the pulse and heart beat of their people;
Christ as King, Prophet and Priest, might seem and look like an anachronism.

Kings, once powerful and mighty,
are now ceremonial heads for the most part.
Prophets, once revered and held in awe, are all gone.
Priests, once sought after for good counsel,
are reeling from various recent financial and sexual scandals.

But I just could not get the images nor their meanings they evoke
out of my mind and my consciousness.
A prophet, to me, is one who proclaims the truth as he sees it
– no matter the consequences.
A priest celebrates the truth that has been given to him
and makes  everything that is true and good sacred.
And a king makes things happen by decreeing something to be the truth.

Christ, the King, the Prophet and the Priest, came to proclaim the truth that is life.
That life is stronger than death.
That he came so that we can live life to the fullest.
That there is more to life than what we experience in this valley of tears.
That I shall not die but will live forever.
And that is the truth.
Truth is often so simple and straightforward,
that we find it difficult to accept it for what it is,
looking for a catch somewhere.

No, Christ is not an anachronism for me.
As King, Prophet, and Priest,
He speaks the truth that deep in my heart I already know.
He frees me from my fears
and makes sacred and holy everything I am and do.

Feast of Christ the King

IMG_20181118_173153

O God
We do well to join all creation
in heaven and on earth in praising you
through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
For you have made us in your own image
and set us, as stewards, over creation.
Once you chose a people and gave them a destiny and,
when you brought them out of bondage to freedom,
they carried with them the promise
that all people would be blessed,
that all people were called to be free.
What the prophets pledged was fulfilled in Jesus Christ,
your Son and our saving Lord.
It has come to pass in every generation
for those who have believed
that Jesus, by his death and resurrection,
gave them new freedom in his Spirit.
It happened to our ancestors
who came to this land as if out of the desert
into a place of promise and hope.
It happens to us still, in our time, as you lead men and women,
through your church to a vision of solidarity and peace
for all of your sons and daughters.
So, with hearts full of love,
we ask your blessing of healing and wholeness
upon our world, our country, our family
through Christ our Lord.

The Gift of Time

IMG_20181113_164154

In my quiet moments, I enjoy looking back to memories of the past, both happy and sad, and how these have brought color into my life
and helped me become the person I that I am today.
I still have my dreams and aspirations for the future.
especially for and with those people and things
who are the reasons why I would get up in the morning.
But memories are in the past and are no more;
they exist only in my mind and in my heart.
My dreams and aspirations are in still the future and are not yet;
they exist only in my imagination and in my will.
The only reality I truly have and can work upon is the present, my here and now.
Life is a great gift and it exists only in the present.
Everything I am and everything I have is but the present.
Sure, I got here because of where I was in the past
and it is from here that I will walk into my future.
But everything that happens to me happens in the here and now.
Here is the best time to be happy.
Not yesterday. Not tomorrow.
Now is the best time to be good.
Not yesterday. Not tomorrow.
I will relish the present moment with deep gratitude
and make it count like it were my only moment,
thus, making it my eternity as well.

In the Afterglow of Thanksgiving

The curfew tolls the knell of parting day,
The lowing herd wind slowly o’er the lea,
The plowman homeward plods his weary way,
And leaves the world to darkness and to me.
~ Thomas Gray

I hear the bell tollong as well for me.
And as the evening of my life deepens,
I am often left with thoughts of my life passing before me
like sailboats heading back to shore after their journeying.

In the afterglow of Thanksgiving,
I still feel the warm embrace of the blessings I am thankful for.
The gift of life
The grace of family and friends
The blessings of nature
The serendipity of the chance
The power and faithfulness of God’s power

In the gentle comfort of all I am thankful for,
I am filled with humility and pride
As I did not, do not deserve any of this.
And yet, God has brought all of these into my life.

He who makes something owns that which he has made.
I write out a poem or make a computer program.
I own that poem or that program.
It is my intellectual property.

God made the world and everything in it.
So simply, He owns the universe.
Likewise, he called me by name and I came to be.
He owns me as well.
How often do I steal from God that which belongs to him:
a day and an hour here,
some thoughts and desires there.
And I selfishly spend these for myself,
instead of living them out for him
or in love and service for others.
I am making his temple a den for this thief.

Saints are saints because they have learned
how to live out their lives in love and service of the maker,
and therefore of the owner of their lives.

In prayer, I try to give a daily accounting of how
I am spending and using the gift of life I have received.

Nagmula sa ‘Yo ang lahat ng ito
Muli kong handog sa ‘Yo
Patnubayan Mo’t paghariang lahat
Ayon sa kalooban Mo
Mag utos Ka, Panginoon ko
Dagling tatalima ako
Ipagkaloob Mo lang ang pag-ibig Mo
At lahat ay tatalikdan ko

The Attitude of Gratitude – Day 9

00001IMG_00001_BURST20181113104139_COVER

Happy Thanksgiving!

And now, bless the God of all,
who has done wondrous things on earth;
Who fosters people’s growth from their mother’s womb,
and fashions them according to his will!
May he grant you joy of heart
and may peace abide among you;

Sometimes, we are so overwhelmed by the rocks, crags, and crannies in our life; we would stop the world in order to get off.  But if we could but just look through and beyond out troubles and difficulties, we can see the wide, big blue ocean. And there is our boat waiting to take us to our new adventure.

Often, we spend out time in praying for favors and blessings, for things that we could be thankful. But if could just but stop and think awhile and start by counting our blessings; we would realize how favored and blessed we are already. We just have to realize that we do not need more things to be thankful for; we simply need to be more thankful.

During moments of grace, I would realize that the sin I am most often guilty of is to even dare to ask for anything more from God. With his gift of life to me, I already have everything I need to be happy and fulfilled. I don’t need more. It is like saying, “God, you missed this gift or this grace when you created me. Can I please have it?” How presumptuous!

I do not need anything more. I have everything I need. In fact, it is in being grateful for what I have that I am able to become the reason for others to be also grateful. And the blessings will just never end:

“Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

The Attitude of Gratitude – Day 8

Thank God for Wednesdays!

Many of our close friends and people who have known us for years know about our Wednesdates.

When we were planning our wedding almost fifty years ago, we had a longish guests wish-list but we were rather short on finances and resources. We thought hard on how to keep our guest list within the bounds of our resources.

We decided to have our wedding in the morning during the middle of the week. And, through natural selection, we were able to keep our guests within manageable levels. I know that the wedding day is the bride’s day and her time to shine in all her beauty. I felt rather bad that Anabelle’s was not so posh. So, I promised her I will make up for it by making all her Wednesdays special, unique, and different. Since then, we would go out on Wednesday nights, usually to have dinner and then see a movie. Sometimes, we would go to a concert or a play instead. There are times we would invite a friend or two to join us. Or, sometimes we would go a visit a friend or family. But Wednesday was our night to do our thing together.

For as long as our friends and family could remember, we always went out on Wednesdates. When our kids were growing up, Mickey our second son would often throw a tantrum when we had to leave them Wednesday nights. In due time, they got the idea and would even egg us to go on our Wednesdate when we would be running late. It is a ‘funny’ story we would share with friends and new acquittances to get a few chuckles.

One time, we shared it with our Discovery Weekend community and very soon, many of them were having their own Wednesdates. It helped couples to strengthen their relationship to have one night in the week just for themselves.

It was a serendipitous promise. I sincerely made it early in our marriage and we have been pretty religious in observing our Wednesdate. I could never have imagined then what fruits it would bring us.

Yes, thank God for Wednesdates!
