Sell What You Have And Follow

P1410530

There can be three levels of defining our relationship with others and the world.
There is ownership: I have possessions, I can even have a family and children. Ownership is good but it can give way to selfishness and acquisitiveness.

Then there is stewardship: I cannot own the earth nor other people
but I have been given responsibility for them and expected to make them grow,
for them to become more and better.

And then there is kinship: we are one with everything that exists.
The earth, and people for that matter, does not belong to me
but I belong to the earth and to other people.
We are fruits of the earth and sons and daughters of the land.
We all belong to one another: dust from dust, blood of m blood, flesh of my flesh.

This is the strongest and most intimate of relationships.
And this is the kind of relationship that Christ was challenging the young man to have:
If you wish to be perfect, go,
sell what you have and give to the poor,
and you will have treasure in heaven.
Then come, follow me.”
For our real treasure are our relationships built on kinship,
our belongingness to one another in Christ.

This kind of faith is both a choice and a responsibility.
When I choose to believe, I acknowledge a Someone
to whom I owe the gift of life I have received.
As a sunflower turns towards the source of the light that provides it with energy,
I too seek to know and understand the source of this precious present.
I am responsible for this life and all the value attendant to it.
I am also responsible for this life that I share with the rest of the world
as I see it manifested and incarnated in others and in nature.
And I come to realize, the faith I have received brings me into a web of relationships
that is the very fabric of life itself.

Making Space

DSCN4259

Even a barren desert can be full of life.
There is reason for hope even in the wilderness.

If I were so full of myself,
how could there be space for anybody else in my life?
If I were filled with so much anger and bitterness,
would there still be room for joy and happiness to come in?
When I feel empty and lacking,
isn’t that a sign that God is trying to find for himself a space in my life?
And I were to fill my life with goodness,
then I would be crowding the bad things out of my life.

I guess this is the reason why children are more attuned to the divine that adults are. Children are tabula rasa, waiting to be written upon.
Untouched as they are by disappointments and worries,
they have room for everyone and everything to come into their lives.
I love children and the lessons they can teach me.

Families As Oases Of Love

P1100648

We live in a secular and open society.
Everything is up for questioning and subject to challenge.
Because nothing is sacred anymore.
No more absolute values or norms.

On the one hand, I welcome this for it has meant freedom
from many oppressive practices and beliefs from the past.
On the other hand, I sometimes fear that the freedom and openness
can go so far that people lose their moorings and become adrift.

I think of the family, long time the bedrock of all stable societies,
now buffeted by problems and challenges from all sides and being torn asunder. Divorce, for example, is now acceptable everywhere.
It seems the Philippines is the only place left on earth where it is not legally allowed.
And there is a strong push to legalize it.

Children are often the innocent victims of all this progressivism.
Abortions of unwanted babies are legal in many countries.
This damages families in ways we may not be aware of.
And all the discussions on same sex marriages and
same sex couple parenting have me all confused.

I thank God for my own family and pray that he keeps blessing us.
I pray for families I know and families everywhere that they may find
the strength, courage and grace to face up to the challenges confronting families today. And I pray that people will still find families as oases of love, hope and faith
in a world seemingly bereft of these.

Love And Marriage, Once More

P1410200

When God commanded men to have dominion over all the earth, they took it to heart. Over the ages men have carved out mountains, redirected rivers, reclaimed land from the sea, made the desert bloom. In the process, they have also denuded and made barren lands where there used to be forests and mountains, polluted the air and the sea, cause the extinction of many plant and animal species.

But standing before this awesome vista of the grottoes in Bryce Canyon, one cannot but stop and stare in wordless wonder. One is overwhelmed by the utter beauty. you may not touch it. Do not tamper, fold , or mutilate. It causes us pause to realize there are something that are left as they are. As God meant them to be.

I write my thoughts today with a lot of trepidation. I am thinking of friends and family who may be disappointed, frustrated, and even hurt by what I will say. “Male and female, He created them.” today’s Gospel tells us. I believe there are only two sexes: man and woman. I accept and respect there may be more than two genders. And gender can be a matter of choice. But sex is physically determined and therefore limited. I can accept, respect, and love people of different genders. And I will fight for their rights to be accepted, respected, and loved. But marriage for me is always between two persons of different sexes.

I can see two gay persons living together in love and having a family by adopting children. But marriage it is not. A man, not necessarily gay, leaves everything and vows to live in obedience and chastity in a community of love with other men. That is not a marriage, but it is living together in love. This is not a marriage but it is nonetheless and binding and lasting relationship.

Today’s Gospel also talks about marriage not being for everyone:

Some are incapable of marriage because they were born so;
some, because they were made so by others;
some, because they have renounced marriage
for the sake of the Kingdom of heaven.

It is sad to see how marriage seems to be losing favor among those for whom it was meant to be. Marriages seems to be some problematic and brittle these days that those who are not married often lose all motivation to get married. This is not surprising in a world where the capacity for true love is also fast going out of fashion.

I feel the need to speak out and I hardly know what to say or do in the face of all the changes happening to us these days.

The Colors Of Grace

P1110440

Today is the great feast of Mary,
she whom the angel hailed as full of grace
so full of grace Elizabeth declared her
as blessed among all women.

I am doing my morning prayers
and I am asking for my portion of daily grace
that I may be blessed like Mary was.
Maybe not as full but enough to last me for the day.

I was struck by this thought:
If one can imagine the colors of the wind,
can grace also come in different colors.
A smile crosses my lips as I imagne the colors of grace.

As I pray for my daily grace, I imagine a shower of gold
A pouring of bright sunshiny yellow stardust
Golden graces to fill my day with joy and happiness

There would be days I could imagine a shower of blue graces
Graces that bring peace, tranquility and equanimity,
which I need in making important decisions in my life.

There are days I need to make my decisions happen
to move and to act on my decisions
I imagine a downpour of green and brown graces
Green to help me make thing spring to life and grow
Brown to give me brawn for work
and the persistence to see things through.

There are days I am beset with anger, frustration,
and all sorts of temptation to give up and to just take things easy.
I imagine red graces would help me fight and overcome
the temptations that come my way.

Would there also be graces of black gold?
I Imagine moments of darkness in my life:
pain, suffering, trials, tribulations,
when things are not going right,
when things are falling apart,
I pray for black golden grace
to give me strength and courage,
patience and perseverance,
faith and fortitude,
until I see the light at the end of the tunnel,
when all the colors come together in a bright shining white light.
Then will I know the fullness of life
in the fulsome Presence of the Source of All Graces.

Aloneness and Togetherness

P1410242

Life is a constant flux and rhythm of being alone and getting together. I love my alone moments. I treasure my being alone with myself and being alone with God. I need these moments to be in touch with who and what I am.

But I also love being together with others. There is no way I can imagine my life without others in it. I love my friends and my family and there is nothing happier than being with them. I need moments with them it is they who have made me what and who I am.

This is the beat of life, like the ebb and flow of my breathing, the circadian rhythm of night and day, the constant changing of the season, the passage from birth to death to life again. Thus, we were created and everyday we are renewed in this fashion.

Let The Children . . .

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Children are a blessing. No one and nothing can give us more joys and happiness. Babies evoke the deepest love from those around them. Nothing can be sweeter-smelling than a baby’s breathe. Nothing softer or smoother than a baby’s skin. No sound more soothing than the cooing or the gurgling of a baby. I find it difficult to imagine how one baby can ever be unwanted.

More babies and more lives are lost to abortion that any other leading cause of death in the US. It is tragic how the wealthiest nations on earth can countenance and even legalize the killing of babies in the womb. It is a sing of the sickness and decadence in society today. It is a devastating thought that such crime is inflicted on defenceless and helpless persons.

Even more devastating is the continuing and continuous crimes committed against children. They are usually the first and most hapless victims to the incessant wars we humans wage against one another. Then, there are the millions of children that die of hunger and malnutrition when we have the wherewithal to wipe out hunger. I mourn for the millions more young lives that are subject to abuse and neglect because parents don’t care or don’t know any better.

I am inspired by families that nurture and raise special children. They are not easy to take care of. But when they care truly and their special children are courageously cared for, theirs is an oasis of love and caring in world going mad with indifference and selfishness. I have seen it often enough to realize that such families have a happiness that is more deeply rooted and not easily taken away. I can play in my mind the blessings and joys these families have received because they have had to care for one special child.

Ours is by and large a sick and decadent society. We can start healing when we come to truly appreciate the gift that children are and reciprocate the care and love that they so freely give and bring us.

“Yesterday” – The Movie

Image result for yesterday

Anabelle and I finally got to see the movie “Yesterday”. The basic premise of the movie is very preposterous and I couldn’t start imagining my life without it. What if we wake up one morning and no one remembers the songs of the Beatles? I would lose most of the soundtrack of my life, from my teenage years up to today.

The Beatles expressed for the early stirrings of young love with their teenybopper songs like “Love Me Do” or “I Saw Her Standing There” or “I Should Have Known Better”.  Or, the insecurities of adolescence as in “Help!” or “Hey Jude”. Or, the affirmations of early adulthood as in “All You Need Is Love”.  And then the bittersweet lessons of life in adulthood as in “Let It Be” or  “The Long And winding Road”. I can’t tell the story of my life (as in “In My Life”) without Beatles song coming into the picture. In fact, the Beatles seemed to be singing my life story in their songs.

It is amazing how they could put into words what I was going through. And their tunes and melodies always seem to echo the beat and tempo of what I was happening in my life. There must be a Universal Spirit where all of us participate that if one dips enough or goes deep down enough, he is able to capture and express what everyone else is thinking or feeling or even being. Deep down, we are all One. In reality, there is no yesterday nor today nor tomorrow. There is but the Eternal Now.

Treasures of the Heart

IMG_20181113_064306-COLLAGE

A tree does not bear fruits and say to itself that it does so to serve nature and humanity. Gold does not glitter and say to itself that it does so to become a thing of value to men.
It is men’s faith and affect that give them value and they become treasures.

I have always been touched by the faith of Filipinos,
specially in times of hardships and adversity
but also in times of joys and celebrations.
And yet it baffles me that in an area of robust economic and material development,
we lag behind all of our neighboring countries.
Is it because our faith has remained infantile and borders on superstition?
Or, has our faith made us passive and less competitive to thrive
in an economic world driven by competition?
Or, are we wrong to hanker for material comforts and worldly possessions
when we already have generosity of spirit and irrepressible joy in our souls?

I know many Filipinos who dream of eventually retiring in the Philippines
in spite of the ‘horror stories’ of corruption and violence,
crimes and inefficiencies in the country
because it is truly ‘more fun in the Philippines’.
Maybe we know or have something that makes the Philippines the paradise that it is.

“For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.”

And The Seeds Fall To The Ground

P1560524

Oh Philippines, my Philippines.
Why has fate been so cruel to you?
Buffeted as you have been through the centuries by one calamity after another. Geographical location, grinding poverty and unstable systems and structures
have all conspired to make life seem so fragile and death
so commonplace in the Philippines.
We seem to be perpetually being buried in an avalanche of troubles and misery.
Typhoons, one after another, are upon us again.
Our lives hang by a thread, tossed in the wind.
We are being buried yet again under tons of dirt, some wrought by nature,
but mostly of our own making or of our feckless leaders.

Some say we are seeds and being buried under all that mud and detritus
is the best thing that can happen to us.
For how else can we make sense of how,
in spite of all the disasters that befall us,
seedlings of goodness keep sprouting all over the land,
saplings of kindness struggle to keep alive,
and everywhere there is always something to smile or celebrate about.

Indeed, every time a disaster strikes, whether natural or man-made,
there is an awesome flowering of a greatness and generosity of spirit.
The rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts are often spearheaded
by anonymous and unsung volunteers who give so selflessly
of their time, talents and treasures.
In times of need and calamity, communities get together
to share the little they have with those without.
Their stories often do not make it to the media.
But one only need to look on the ground to seed these seedlings
coming out of the ground.

Jesus said to his disciples:
“Amen, amen, I say to you,
unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies,
it remains just a grain of wheat;
but if it dies, it produces much fruit.
Whoever loves his life loses it,
and whoever hates his life in this world
will preserve it for eternal life.”
