The Universe In A Grain Of Sand

Sunset 3

In temperate regions, it is Autumn and the leaves on trees have started to change their colors. I remember enjoying these autumn leaves when we lived in California. In other places the colors of the leaves is even more wilder and riotous. It makes for an awesome and delightful sight and experience.

Soon the trees will begin shedding off their leaves. The landscape will be bare, cold and desolate. Yet, there is ever the hope of spring when everything comes back to life. It is amazing how God (okay, Nature for some) can transform detritus into beauty or dust (okay, it is in fact stardust) into a breathing human being. It is even more amazing how He can transform me, a weak-kneed sinner into a good person through his grace.

“Just so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

Life is a paradox and its deepest truths are a mystery. There are realities that cannot be proven scientifically and some people have concluded that these do not exist, like the soul, or spirit, or life after death or even God. Some truths are contradictions, like it is in giving that we receive; in pardoning that we are pardoned and in dying that we are born to eternal life; that being slave is to be free and that suffering and pain lead to happiness and joy.

I have learned that the yoke of love and forgiveness is indeed a lighter load than the bitterness and anger that comes with hate and desire for revenge; that the yoke of sharing and generosity is easier to carry than the anxiety and envy that comes with greed and self-centeredness; that being a slave to simplicity and service frees me from the enslavement of and obsession for material goods an possession.

Yes, Christ and his words make sense and they are indeed the source of life. But there are times I refuse to listen or to heed them. A cup full of stale water cannot take in new and fresh water.

Transformative and Salvific Acts

IMG_2329.JPG

Jesus always had a special place in his heart for the poor, the afflicted and the suffering, as well as for the oppressed and the abandoned. He taught me that life is not easy. In fact, he told his disciples to take up their cross daily. I have taken to heart his teachings on the transformative power of love. Suffering and pain, borne out of love, changes us and others for the better. A life lived just for one’s self is selfish and sad. A life lived for others, that is what makes one glad. While Jesus is realistic not to be blind-sided by sadness and suffering, he also had the most comforting words for those who would follow him.

“Life is difficult. This is the great truth, one of the greatest truths—it is a great truth because once we see this truth, we transcend it.”
~ M. Scott Peck

“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
~ Jesus Christ

“Amen. Let it be.”

Remembrance And Celebration

Today is All Saints day, a celebration of all those who have followed Christ by taking up their cross daily, entering the narrow gate and passing through the eye of the needle. They have loved and served the poor and the suffering and have themselves tried to live like these poor and suffering ones. The world in contrast loves and serves the rich and powerful. The Church has always done well when it kept its eyes and heart focused on these that Christ loved: the least, the last and the lost. But alas, the Church has also succumbed to the temptations of the world and has at moments in her history have also lusted for riches and power. These moments often produced the darkest days and most scandalous periods in Church history. When this happens, the Church becomes dogmatic and even triumphalistic. I make the beatitudes my prayer today. May I never lose sight of the Suffering Servant nailed to the cross.

Today is also a day of remembrance for our dearly departed, specially our parents: Mama and Papa, Ima and Tatang. They may not have lived heroic lives in the usual terms. But any person who brings and rears another into life is a hero. Coupled to that fact, is the promise of Christ that whoever believes in him will not die but will live forever. Holding on that promise, I remember and am grateful not only for the gift of life I received from them but also the precious gift of faith.

The anti-thesis of Love is not Hatred but Fear. Fear breeds anger which leads to hatred. Our deepest fears are of death, poverty, pain, sufferings, isolation, unjust oppression. Christ took on our deepest fears and transformed them into blessings.

Remembering my loved ones who have died; their lives have not been taken away but transformed.

Following the Christ

P1030287.jpg

Many people in the world today seek comfort and fulfilment
in power, money, success and fame
and many define their success in these terms.

Christ, on the other hand, promised his disciples the fulness of life for eternity
by going through the narrow door, the eye of the needle, taking up the cross.

What a stark contrast.
Yet it is the latter group that have done a lot more to help the poor,
to give relief to the suffering,
to teach the ignorant,
to comfort the sick and afflicted.

Some of the former might have turned to philanthropy later in their lives;
but they have spent most of their lives lusting for more power, money, success and fame. The choice for me is clear but living that choice is not easy.

One of the hallmarks of a Christ follower is generosity.
Generosity, while always good, may sometimes be prideful and self-centered,
wishing attention to oneself or wanting to enjoy some selfish satisfaction at doing good. Some signs of true generosity:
doing it anonymously,
giving to those who cannot repay (the least, the lost and the last),
sharing time, talents and treasure,
and giving even though, or specially when, it hurts.

Faith: An Answer to Greed

P1030302.jpg

I feel aghast at the naked selfishness and greed
there is in the business world, as typified by Wall Street.
A corporation makes billions of dollars in profits but it stocks would tank
if the figure were but 1% below the expectations of analysts.
Should there be the slightest sign of uncertainty, doubt or fear in the market,
there would be a flurry of sell-outs and stock prices would head south.
A CEO of a pharma company makes close to a hundred million dollars in salary.
What will he do with all that money?
How can one justify such an obscene amount of compensation for just one person?
And all these movements affect the perceived wealth and well-being of millions of people.

In contrast, as a believer in Christ, I live with mystery.
I see the world in a tiny seed and seek to change what I can like yeast.
It would seem like a foolish faith;
but there are times I realize it is the right thing to do
in the face of the absurdity and even aridity I see in this world.

De Rerum Natura Redux

EFFECTS

The nature of anything is the purpose for which it is made or created.
The nature of the chair is to be sat upon to give rest or comfort to the ‘seater’.

It becomes more complicated and difficult when we try to define the nature of more complex objects.
Is the nature of a tree to give fruits, lumber, shade and oxygen to humans or is it to bear fruits to propagate itself?
Or is it just a tree unto itself?

Is the nature of a star to just burn for millions of years to give light and energy to everything surrounding it?
Or, is it to finally explode to give rise to stardust that will give form to new beings, including humans? Or is a star also a being unto itself?

What is the nature of man? Is it to know, love and serve God as the Catechism teaches us? Or is it to drink and be merry for tomorrow we die? Or is man just a random accident in the universe?

Why do I bother with these questions any way? I feel that having a serious answer to these questions make a real difference in how I live out my life. Will I be content with the shallows or will I venture out into the depths? Will I be content with just a piece or will I try to go for the whole.

Wholeness. Holiness. Fullness.

Alone With God In Nature

IMG_20191026_083353-EFFECTS

No matter how busy the days became, Jesus always found  the time and place to pray.
His favorite time to pray is either deep into the night or early in the morning.
His favorite place is in some quiet, secluded place, preferably the mountains.
When he want to be alone and one with his Father,
he sought him in the stillness of the night and in solitude with nature.
God gave us the fullness of nature for us to encounter him there.

The earth was formed about 4.57 billion years ago.
Man came upon the scene only about 200,000 years ago.
It took all those years to prepare the earth and make it habitable and hospitable
for human life to survive and prosper.

We have done more in the last 200 years than all the people before us
to make the earth less habitable and less hospitable for human life.
We are slowly killing ourselves.
In terms of geological periods, we are doing that rather fast.

Man does not own creation. Man is part of creation.
When we thrash our planet and ruin it; we thrash our lives and ruin ourselves.
Thus, I will live simply and have respect for everything that lives.
I will curve my propensity for consumption and use only what I need
so that others may also live.
I will share more as I realize that the earth is meant to be shared.
If priority in occupancy is sign of possession,
then other living things have greater rights to earth than humans
for they came way ahead of us humans here on earth.
If man was created in God’s image and likeness,
then the beauty and order we see in nature is also a reflection
of the beauty and awesomeness of the Creator.

My Life’s Journey These Days

P1070546.jpg

I used to look at life as a series of destinations:
graduations, getting married, coming of the children, marking milestones in their lives, promotions, new jobs, higher responsibilities and then retirement.

Today I look more at the journey that is life
and I mean to enjoy it not thinking of any particular destination.
I take time to relish the sights and the sounds,
the tastes and the smells, the people and the places.
Like any long journey, I try to travel light.
I leave all unnecessary baggage behind,
be these material things or unpleasant memories.
I take only what I need: an eye for wonder, a taste for adventure and a happy heart.
I smile at everyone I meet.
I am ready to share my stories with others
if they have the time to have coffee or wine with me.
I do right by my heart and take the time to love nature, others,
and my constant traveling companion, God.

Relationships Are The Real Riches

DSCN3612.jpg

Who am I, really?
As I think of the defining moments in my life,
I realize that I can never fully define myself except in relationships with others.
One person leaves my life
and my life is never the same again.
Another person comes
and my life is richer for it.
People come and go
– some fleeting, others lingering
and still others staying for a good while.
And because of my encounter with them,
I am never the same person
I was before I met them.

Sometimes, my life seems like a tangled web of interconnected relationships.
At other times, it is a rich tapestry of bright, beautiful and colorful relations.
The currency of relationships is not money nor material goods
but the time we spend and invest in such relationships.
I see people who have so much money and material possessions
that they don’t have time for others.
These people have very sad and sorry relationships.
There are others I know who are detached from money and material goods,
they can easily find the time to spend with others.
These people have happy relationships.

Wondering Why

DSCN4999.JPG

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Now the earth was formless and empty,
darkness was over the surface of the deep,
and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”

It never fails to amaze me how the whole of the universe started. What is even more awesome is how and why we are here. The earth is one of a billion possibilities and still it exists. I am also one of a billion possibilities and here I am. This tremendous gift of a living space that the earth is and the gift of life that I am enjoying is totally unmerited. I can only respond with a deep and humble gratitude.

Imagine all the design and details that went into it. What if, in creating the universe (or the universes), God forgot to put in the salt? How bland life on earth would be. What if, in the final days of creation, he misplaced the sugar and left it elsewhere? We would never appreciate how sweet life could be. Everything we could possibly need in right here at home on planet Earth.

He has filled our world with all things good and yet we go hankering for more. He has created enough good things for everyone and yet how come a few have so much and the many others hardly any. Everything has a reason and everything has a season and how we have messed the whole thing up. One has only to look at night skies or simply appreciate nature to know that it was love that made all of this beauty, goodness and bounty to happen.
