Yesterday was Good Shepherd Sunday. As is his style, Jesus draws examples and images from nature to bring home his message. Here, he is the shepherd and we are his flock. There shall be one shepherd and one fold. The Good Shepherd knows his flock and they know his voice.
On other occasions, Jesus talks about the birds of the air and the lilies of the field to bring home God’s love and care for us. On another instance, he used the mustard seed to teach us about faith. He told the stories of the sower, the budding fig tree, the pearl of great price, the wheat and the tares.
Just as Jesus used imagery from Nature to teach us about eternal truths, so does nature in her own way proclaim God’s Kingdom.
