And That Is Why You Are My Friend

You are my friend because
I was alone and all by myself,
And you came along to draw me
out of my loneliness.
And all of a sudden,
the world around me became a scene
of many vibrant colors,
of different wonderful sounds,
of delightful tastes and aromas.
You did nothing particular that I remember
but you changed my world just being in it.
That is why you are my friend.

You are my friend because
I was lost in self-absorption,
sometimes sorry for myself,
sometimes stoically accepting who I am.
You helped me realize
all the goodness in me waiting to be realized,
all the beauty wanting to be expressed,
all the truth aching to be proclaimed.
Yes, I have changed because of you.
And I have changed for the better.
That is why you are my friend.

You are my friend because
You know the melody I am singing
even when I can’t sing the tune.
You give me the lyrics of the song
especially when I am at a loss for words.
You know my heart when I am deliriously happy.
You know my heart when I am moody and crabby.
You know my heart specially when I am in the depths of misery.
For you know the tears are there even before they start to show.
And with out, my tears can flow
freely,
unabashedly,
unrestrainedly.
You do nothing.
You say nothing.
You only stay.
That is why you are my friend.

You are my friend because,
while we may be one and the same in many respects,
you respect my uniqueness and never intrude.
We share many things but
you respect that deepest part of me that is mine and mine alone.
In that deepest core, it is only I and my God.
And in the sanctity of our friendship,
you have never trespassed on my Sacred Space,
my Holy of Holies.
And that is why you are my friend.

You are my friend and
I bless the day that you came my way.
I thank God for the gift of you in my life.
I thank God for the wealth of insights I have learned from you.
I thank God for giving me a glimpse of heaven through our friendship.
and most of all, I thank God for revealing Himself to me through you.
And that is why you are my friend.

I will give you thanks among the peoples, O Lord.
~ Psalm 57

Jesus said to his disciples:
“This is my commandment: love one another as I love you.
No one has greater love than this,
to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
You are my friends if you do what I command you.
I no longer call you slaves,
because a slave does not know what his master is doing.
I have called you friends,
because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father.
It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you
and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain,
so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you.
This I command you: love one another.”
John 15:12-17
